Statement from Councillor Matt Ward, Leader Walsall Labour Group & Councillor Tina Jukes, Deputy Leader:
“We are incredibly concerned about the rising levels of violent crime across Walsall. Over the last few days we have seen yet another senseless loss of life as a result of gun violence on the streets of Walsall. Our condolences go to the families and friends of those affected by this latest incident. We also wish to send our most heartfelt sympathies to anyone who has suffered loss due to violence on our streets.
The concern amongst residents at this time is shared by us all. We have as councillors, been inundated with calls from residents saying that they feel the streets have become lawless, some even saying they wish to move out of the area as a result. We wish to reassure all residents that local councillors are working around the clock with both the Police and Council Officers to ensure a swift and joined-up response to this latest incident. Cllr Matt Ward has also been in constant contact with the Leader of the Council.
An urgent request to meet with Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby and Simon Foster, the West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner, to discuss what immediate action the Police are taking in the aftermath of this tragedy, has also been made.
Our deepest thanks go to the local Policing unit for their swift action which has resulted in timely arrests connected to this most recent incident. We also wish to thank them for their increased presence on the streets at this time whilst investigations remain ongoing.
We urge everyone across Walsall to be the eyes and ears of their communities and to come forward to the Police should they have any concerns about criminal activity or violent crime. Together we can show these mindless gangs and thugs that this violence is not going to be tolerated on our streets.”
