There is nothing more important for a child than school and a good education. We wish to have children in Walsall back at school as soon as possible but only when it is safe to do so.
At this moment in time we are NOT convinced that schools are safe for our children to return. The school environment needs to be safe for the children, teachers, school staff and parents. At this time we do not feel that schools have been able to meet the requirements that the School Unions, as the representatives of the School Staff, have asked to be met in order to satisfy them that it will be a safe working environment.
It is vital that we do not put our children in danger of contracting this virus and we must appreciate that the contact made at school can and will spread throughout a whole community. School staff are also parents, carers, grandparents, spouses etc and it is not acceptable to put them at risk at a time where Walsall’s rate of infection is the highest within the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Area.
The steps set out by the School Unions must be met before we can support the return of children to our schools in the borough. We stand in solidarity with our School Staff, who have done so much to keep our children learning during this lockdown.
