During the full council meeting on Monday 15th July, councillors were asked to consider a motion to rule out new council investments in fossil fuel companies.
This motion was tabled by Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Ian Shires (Willenhall North), and was supported by Councillors Chris Bott (Darlaston South), Mayor of Walsall Paul Bott (Darlaston South), Daniel Barker (Short Heath) and Ann Young (Blakenall).
The motion requested that Walsall Council review its investment strategy and to develop and implement a Responsible
Investment Policy which would rule out future investments in fossil fuel companies. It also called upon the West Midlands Pension Fund to divest from fossil fuels.
Walsall Labour Group Leader Councillor Aftab Nawaz spoke in support of the motion.
The Walsall Conservatives chose to oppose the motion, and subsequently the motion was defeated.
